In Brief

A small K-12 school out in Saitama, about 30-40 minutes from central Tokyo. Around 250-270 students total. Ontario (Canada) curriculum, taught in English, leading to the OSSD diploma rather than IB or A Levels. Worth knowing upfront: this is not one of the big-name central-Tokyo internationals. Different beast.

The student body is heavily Japanese. Many join from Japanese kindergartens or transfer in from the local system, and there's a dedicated ESL track in junior high for kids whose English isn't there yet. So the day-to-day feel is more bilingual-Japanese than truly international, even with 20+ nationalities on paper. Good if you want your child to stay rooted in Japanese language and culture. Less good if you're after a fully English-immersion peer group.

Public reviews are thin and mostly warm. According to one parent, "the Canadian curriculum has provided a well-rounded education, and the dedicated teachers have been extremely helpful." Students mention small classes, friendly atmosphere, no real bullying culture, and decent sports. One long-tenured student said they'd been there 12 years with good teachers across grades. There's a quiet, family-feel community rather than a glossy big-school polish.

University outcomes lean Canadian — University of Toronto and UBC are the common destinations, with some heading to Japanese and US universities. The school says recent cohorts have all been accepted to their first-choice university, which sounds good but reflects a small graduating class.

Practical points for your friend: - Location matters. Tokorozawa is suburban Saitama — green, quieter, more affordable, but a real commute if you settle central. Most CIS families live nearby. - Facilities are solid (separate division buildings, gym, sports ground) but campus is rural in feel, not urban. - Boarding is available with a dorm 8 minutes from campus. - Fees sit well below the top-tier Tokyo internationals.

Honest read: a sincere, small, community-led school doing a credible job, particularly for Japanese and returnee families who want a Canadian pathway and to keep one foot in Japanese language. If your friend's priority is a large, IB-driven, fully expat peer environment, this isn't that. If they want a calmer suburban setting, smaller classes, and Canadian university routes, it deserves a serious look.
