In Brief

It's small. Around 400 students, K through Abitur, all on one campus in Tsuzuki, Yokohama. That's the headline. People who choose it choose it for that.

The community is the main draw. German-speaking families anchor it - lots of corporate postings from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, plus mixed German-Japanese households. According to one parent, DSTY is "the centre of the German-speaking community in Japan" - Oktoberfest pulls 5,000+ people onto campus every year. If your friend's family is plugged into that world, they'll land softly. The starthilfegruppe (parent welcome group) is genuinely useful for new arrivals.

Academics are the German system, ending in the German International Abitur - the only one in Japan. That's a real asset if the family might rotate back to Germany or send kids to European universities. One teacher put it plainly: teachers are sent from Germany or hired directly from German-speaking countries, so the standard is consistent with home.

The trade-offs people actually flag:

- Location. Tsuzuki is far from central Tokyo. The school bus reaches Shibuya, Setagaya, Meguro, but it's a long ride. Families in Tokyo proper sometimes regret not living closer to Yokohama. - Language barrier for entry. Kindergarten is forgiving. By secondary, fluent German is expected. If the kids don't have solid German already, this is the wrong school. - Small can feel small. One cohort per year group. Friend groups are set early. If a child doesn't click socially, there's nowhere else to go on campus. - It's German-system, not international-system. The teaching style, expectations, and culture are German. Families expecting an Anglo-international-school feel are surprised.

Bottom line for your friend: If the family speaks German at home and wants European-track schooling with a warm, embedded community, this is a strong, generous-spirited place. If they want flexibility, English-medium, or central Tokyo convenience, it's not the right fit. Visit the campus, ride the bus route once, and talk to two current parents - the community is small enough that introductions happen quickly.
