In Brief

Quick note first: HJIS isn't actually in Tokyo. It's on the Yokohama waterfront, about 7 minutes from Yokohama Station. Plenty of Tokyo families still use it, but factor in the commute.

The basics. IB continuum (PYP/MYP/DP), preschool through Grade 12. Around 500-530 students, 50+ nationalities. Purpose-built campus opened in 2019. CIS-accredited.

What people actually say. The community-feel is the consistent good news. Small school, families know each other, teachers know the kids. According to one parent, their son had "a fantastic experience" from grades 5 to 8 and thrived socially and academically. Fees are noticeably lower than the big-name Tokyo internationals, which is a real draw.

Where it gets bumpier. Teacher turnover comes up a lot. One parent said teachers seem "really unhappy with the management team resulting in very high turn over." Working-conditions reviews from staff echo this — complaints about administration, support, and pay relative to fees. A separate parent moved their child elsewhere over a weak science programme, while still rating the humanities and arts well.

Bullying and integration. Most reviews say it's a warm, low-bullying environment. One dissenting parent flagged "superficial friendship for newcomers" — worth asking about if your friend's child is joining mid-year.

Worth knowing. HJIS is not a member of the main Japan Council of International Schools, which can matter for inter-school sport, events and how peer schools view transfers.

Bottom line for the friend. A genuinely warm, affordable IB option with a strong sense of community. Go in with eyes open on staff turnover and ask pointed questions about science staffing and how new kids are settled in. If the family is Tokyo-based, drive the commute at rush hour before committing.
