In Brief
Dowen is a well-known co-ed secondary school in Lekki Phase 1. Day and boarding, ages 11 to 18. Nigerian and British curricula side by side. IGCSE results are genuinely strong year on year, and that is the main reason ambitious Lagos families still put it on the list.
You will hear about Sylvester Oromoni almost immediately. A 12-year-old boarder died in late 2021 after his family said he had been bullied. The story dominated Nigerian news for months and the school was briefly shut. In April 2024 the Lagos coroner cleared the school and the accused students, ruling the death was natural but avoidable, with blame placed on medical and parental negligence. Plenty of Lagosians still have strong feelings either way. Worth knowing before any Lekki dinner conversation.
Beyond the headline case, the older parent and alumni chatter is mixed. Academics and teaching get consistent praise. Boarding gets the most pushback, particularly from people who were there 2017 to 2021. According to one former female student, "I was forced to go into relationship with one SSS 3 boy who was a bully in 2017... because he always picked on my brother." Another alumna said reporting bullying through school channels felt pointless. These are old accounts, but they shape the local reputation.
The school has leaned hard into anti-bullying messaging since, with counsellors, home-room tutors and a stated zero-tolerance policy. One parent said "the teachers are dedicated and truly care about each student's success," and that view is genuinely held by many current families.
Practical read for your friend: if she is considering day, this is a serious academic option in Lekki and many parents are very happy. If she is considering boarding, push hard on pastoral care, prefect discipline, reporting routes and dorm supervision before committing. Ask current parents, not just the admissions team. Visit during a normal week, not an open day.
