In Brief

Quick context first: Olympia isn't an expat international school. It's a Vietnamese-founded bilingual school in Nam Tu Liem (south-west Hanoi, well away from the Tay Ho expat enclave) and the student body is overwhelmingly local Vietnamese families. That shapes everything else.

The reputation among Hanoi parents is genuinely good. It was set up by Vietnamese parents in 2003 who wanted something less rote than the state system, and that ethos has stuck. Kids come out more confident, more willing to speak up, stronger on soft skills and project work than peers at traditional Vietnamese schools. It picked up IB Diploma authorisation in 2022 (the first bilingual school in Vietnam to do so), which has lifted the upper end.

The honest caveats people share:

Fees are punchy for what it is. Local parents on Vietnamese forums repeatedly question whether the price matches the output. As one parent put it: "the school markets very heavily, and a lot of people get taken in." Worth weighing.

English isn't as deep as the marketing implies. According to one parent, English teaching focuses on the basics and kids who want real fluency end up topping up at outside English centres. Fine if your friend's child is already a strong English speaker; a real consideration if they're relying on the school to deliver native-level English.

Operationally a bit chaotic behind the scenes. One teacher said management is "frequently in a state of chaos" with admin trickling down. Another said it was a "great atmosphere" with engaging students. Both probably true.

Location matters. Trung Van is a 30-45 minute commute from West Lake in traffic. The school bus network is genuinely good (50 routes, citywide) but it's a long day for a small child.

Bottom line for your friend: if they want their child immersed in Vietnamese language and culture with a softer, more progressive teaching style, and they're not chasing a foreign-passport-style international experience, Olympia is a credible choice and one of the better bilingual options in the city. If they want native-level English, an expat peer group, or West Lake convenience, this isn't the right fit and they should look elsewhere.
