In Brief
The honest read: Wellspring is a large Vietnamese-owned bilingual school that markets itself as international. Worth knowing what that actually means before you commit.
Who actually goes there. Almost entirely Vietnamese families. If your kid wants a multinational peer group, this isn't it. UNIS, BIS, or St Paul American sit in that lane. Wellspring is bilingual-leaning-Vietnamese.
The campus and vibe. Genuinely impressive site in Long Bien — 4.3 hectares, bright, well-resourced. Kids seem happy. The "Happy School" framing isn't just brochure talk; people do say the day-to-day feels warm and the students are likable. According to one teacher, the kids are "polite, cooperative, and enjoyable to teach."
Academics — the soft spot. This is where you push. They badge as Cambridge but quietly dropped IGCSE. The high-school track is now University of Missouri online (MUHigh), which gets a lukewarm reception from teachers and isn't a recognised brand at university gates. One teacher said students "may not be the strongest academically compared to other schools." If your kid is aiming at competitive UK/US universities, ask very specific questions about Grade 11-12 outcomes and where leavers actually go.
Staff turnover. A recurring theme. Reports of contracts not renewed, heavy use of inexperienced volunteer teachers, and management described as top-down. Ask how long your child's homeroom and English teachers have been there. If the answer is "this is their first year," that's the pattern.
Location. Long Bien is east of the Red River. If you're living in Tay Ho or the Old Quarter (where most expats land), the bridge crossing at rush hour is the real cost. School bus exists and is used heavily.
Bottom line for your friend. A solid choice for a family that wants a bilingual Vietnamese-immersion environment, a beautiful campus, and a happy child — at a price well below the top-tier internationals. A weaker choice if you want genuine international diversity or a clearly mapped path to a top Western university. Visit, sit in on a Grade 10+ class, and ask for the leavers' destinations list.
