In Brief
Big picture. ISM is the giant of Indian schooling in the Gulf, around 9,200 students on the Darsait campus. It is non-profit, community-funded, and the spiritual home of the Indian expat scene in Muscat.
Curriculum and results. Pure CBSE, all the way to Class XII. The Class XII average sat around 82% in the most recent cycle, with strong Commerce and Science streams. Academically respected and consistent. If your child is heading toward an Indian-system university route, this is an established pipeline.
Money. By Muscat standards it is extremely affordable, OMR 450-520 a year for tuition. That is the headline reason most families choose it. There is also a refundable deposit on first admission that is worth budgeting for.
Fees friction. There has been real parent pushback in recent years on creeping monthly fee rises and an added infrastructure fee. The 2024-25 round was frozen after a parent memorandum. According to one parent group, the monthly fee "more than doubled in seven years." Worth knowing rather than worrying about.
Class sizes. This is the single biggest practical caveat. Average class size is reported around 47, and some classes in the Indian school system in Oman have hit 55. If your child needs close attention, this matters.
Teaching. Most parent feedback is warm. According to one parent the teachers are "qualified, kind and always helpful." Others are blunter, one wrote that some staff "silence the kids by shouting." Expect the usual large-school inconsistency, your child's section leader matters more than the school brochure.
Admissions. Demand outstrips supply across the Indian schools, especially in the lower years. One parent on a local forum called the wait "a living nightmare." Apply through the central online window in the Jan-Feb cycle, get documents ready early, and have a plan B.
Community. Strong. Active alumni network since 1997, lots of co-curriculars, sports, scouts, debates. If your family wants to plug straight into the Indian community in Muscat, ISM is the front door.
Bottom line for your friend. Solid, affordable, academically serious, well-networked. Best fit if they want CBSE, value for money, and a big-school environment. Less ideal if they want small classes or a Western-style international setup, in which case they should look elsewhere in Muscat.
