In Brief
First thing to know: KISH is a Korean-curriculum school, taught in Korean, run under the Korean Ministry of Education. Admissions in practice are for Korean nationals registered with the Korean Embassy in Vietnam. If your family isn't Korean, this one's almost certainly off the table — look elsewhere.
If you are Korean and weighing it up, here's the honest texture from people on the ground.
It's the biggest Korean international school in the world. Over 2,200 students on a site built for far fewer. The Korean press has openly called for a second school in Hanoi because this one is bursting — long waitlists, classrooms tight, the playground famously narrow. Expect crowded.
Tuition is genuinely low compared to BIS, UNIS, Concordia and the other Western internationals. That's the main reason families pick it.
Academics: kids come out with strong English alongside Korean, and the school is well regarded for sport and dance. According to one parent, "the kids' English and all-round ability are excellent, but the teachers' university admissions strategy is the worst" — recent 대입 (Korean uni entry) outcomes have disappointed some families, particularly around the 특례 (overseas-Korean special admission) route, which staff are seen as under-experienced in. Some native English teachers are spoken about warmly, others described as coasting.
Pastoral side: as numbers have grown, one parent commentary said student misbehaviour — smoking, motorbikes, hanging around entertainment districts — has become more visible despite staff trying to police it. Worth asking about on a tour.
Community is the genuine strength. Active parent body, lots of school events, strong sense of belonging for Korean families landing in Hanoi who want their kids to slot straight back into the Korean system later. One teacher said the school works hardest for families who plan to return to Korea — less so for those eyeing US/UK universities.
Bottom line for your friend: great fit if Korean curriculum + Korean university pathway is the plan and budget matters. Less ideal if they want IB/A-level, Western university outcomes, or a non-Korean peer group. And a non-starter if they're not Korean.
