In Brief

CIS is the right school for families specifically seeking a Canadian pathway - the Alberta Diploma is widely accepted for North American university applications, and the Panyu campus is self-contained and well run. If IB or British A-levels are the priority, look elsewhere first.

As the first Alberta-accredited Pre-K to Grade 12 school in mainland China, CIS holds a clear niche. The Alberta curriculum is not especially common in China, which makes CIS the default for Canadian expat families and others who want the OSSD or Alberta Diploma for university applications in North America. The school layers IB PYP into early years and AP into the senior years, giving the programme more breadth than a purely provincial Canadian curriculum would.

The school reports that 100% of its graduates received offers from universities, with alumni heading to institutions in Canada, the US, UK, Australia and beyond. With around 500 students across 45+ nationalities, the community is small enough for teachers to know students well. Families in the community mention the caring atmosphere and the quality of individual teacher attention as consistent positives.

CIS is owned by CIEO, a for-profit Chinese education group, which is worth understanding before you commit. The Panyu location suits families based in that district but adds 40-50 minutes each way for families living in Tianhe or Haizhu. Fees run from CNY 188,000 (Nursery 2) to CNY 258,000 (Grades 10-12) - the most affordable of the well-established international schools in Guangzhou - but confirm the full fee schedule including any supplementary charges directly with admissions.

What parents value
  • Only Alberta-accredited Pre-K to Grade 12 school in mainland China. All teachers Alberta-certified. 100% of graduates received university offers (school data, 2016-2024 average).
  • Affordable relative to IB peers in Guangzhou: CNY 188,000-258,000 per year. Boarding available for secondary students. IB PYP in early years + AP courses in senior school.
Points of consideration
  • Owned by CIEO, a for-profit Chinese education group. Ask about fee escalation history and governance. The Alberta Diploma is less familiar to European and Asian universities than IB or A-levels.
  • Panyu location means a significant commute for families based in Tianhe, Haizhu, or central Guangzhou. Confirm whether the school bus covers your address before applying.
