In Brief
The short version: it's the German-curriculum option in Brussels, and the only one. About 560 kids, ages 3 months to 18, leading to the German International Abitur or Fachabitur. Sits in Wezembeek-Oppem, a leafy commune east of the city with a real cluster of German-speaking families.
What people actually say:
It feels small and family-ish. According to one parent, children "have felt very comfortable since day one and they have made great friends right from the start." That's the consistent thread — newcomers settle quickly, partly because over half the families are international and used to absorbing new arrivals.
Language support is genuine, not just marketing. There's a structured DaZ/DaF programme (German as a second/foreign language) running through primary and secondary, plus French and English support for new joiners. The bilingual pre-school splits into German/English and German/French groups.
Where to push harder in your visit:
Teaching quality has historically been variable — older parent commentary described a range "from video-watching in physics to demanding lessons." Leadership has changed since then (Jochen Flohn is the current principal) but worth asking current parents how consistent teaching is across departments now.
The secondary school runs only two parallel streams per year, which limits ability-grouping. One parent point that has come up repeatedly is that requests for stronger differentiation by language level can't really be met at this size. Fine for a confident German-speaker, something to probe if your kid is borderline.
The new-build was cancelled. The German federal government pulled the funding mid-project, so the school is now renovating the existing 1970s building instead of moving into a new one. Worth asking where the building works are up to and whether it affects daily life on campus.
Cost note for EU families: unlike some peers, the EU institutions do not cover iDSB fees for staff children. If your friend is on an EU contract, this is a real out-of-pocket decision.
Bottom line: if German curriculum and Abitur matter, this is the school. Tight community, strong language support, genuine warmth. Smallness is the trade-off — fewer streams, less subject choice in the upper years than the bigger international schools nearby. Most families who go in eyes-open seem to be glad they did.
