In Brief
EEB4 is the youngest and least crowded of the four Brussels European Schools. Purpose-built campus, opened on the Laeken site in 2012. Around 3,000 students, eight language sections including a strong English section. Free if a parent works for an EU institution; otherwise category III fees apply.
What parents and students actually say:
The mood is mostly positive. The buildings are newer and the classes feel less packed than at Woluwe or Uccle. According to one recent graduate, "classes are less crowded and teachers can follow the kids better." The international mix is the real draw — kids land in a class with 20+ nationalities and come out fluent in two or three languages.
The location is the main gripe. Laeken sits in the north-west, well away from where most EU-institution families live. School bus rides can be long for the youngest children. One parent put it bluntly: Laeken "is the most recent and probably has most spaces for English speaking kids, but not so popular due to location."
Other things that come up: - Canteen food has a poor reputation. Worth packing lunch early on. - It's still a European School — so expect a system, not a boutique. Big institution, occasional bureaucracy, teaching quality varies by section and by teacher. - Less of the social hierarchy and "rich kid" feel some report at the older Brussels sites. - The APEEE (parents' association) runs buses and after-school clubs and is genuinely active.
Bottom line for your friend: if they're EU-eligible and don't mind the commute, EEB4 is probably the easiest of the four to get an English-section place at, and the newest building is a real plus. The school is doing a good job within a stretched system. Visit, talk to the section coordinator, and ask specifically about the bus route from where they're planning to live — that one detail makes or breaks the daily experience.
