In Brief
The basics. Private. Founded 1888. Around 540 students. Sits in central Zurich (Arbenzstrasse, district 8). Pioneer of the bilingual German/English Matura - has been doing it for 25+ years. Pathway feeds up from Lakeside primary if you go that route.
What people genuinely say. It's the historic "Goldküste" school - the lakeside private school for old Zurich families. Multi-generational. Parents and grandparents went there. According to one local commentator, in the well-off lake-shore communities, "the Freigymi is often the only option considered." That tells you something about the social fabric.
The good. Small and family-feeling. Students get noticed. Parents describe close contact between teachers and families, and quick communication when something is up - one parent said teachers are "really there for the students when they need them." Pastoral care is taken seriously, with an in-house adolescent psychiatrist link.
The honest tensions. - It is academically demanding. The bilingual track expects near-native German and English. Don't go in thinking the private fee buys an easier ride - it doesn't. - It is a bubble. Affluent, networked, traditional. If your friend wants their child surrounded by international diversity, FGZ is not that. It is Swiss, well-heeled, and many families have been there for generations. - It is full. Capacity is around 540 and the school has been clear it doesn't intend to grow. Apply early.
Who it suits. A family settling in long-term, comfortable in German, wanting their child on the Swiss Matura track with a bilingual edge - and happy to be inside a tight Zurich social network. If the goal is an international/IB cohort with lots of expat churn, ICS or ZIS are a different fit.
Bottom line. Solid, traditional, genuinely caring private gymnasium with a strong bilingual offer. Worth shortlisting if your friend is settling in Zurich for the long haul and the child has the German. Visit, sit in on a class, and pay attention to how the cohort feels - that's where the real fit/no-fit answer is.
