In Brief
This is not a Western international school. It's a Chinese school with a Canadian (British Columbia) overlay, mostly out in Longgang, well away from the Shekou/Nanshan expat bubble where almost every other foreign family in Shenzhen settles.
The student body is overwhelmingly Chinese nationals, with foreign students making up only a small slice. If your friend wants their kid surrounded by an internationally diverse peer group, this isn't it. The teaching language is mixed: Chinese national curriculum in primary and middle school, BC curriculum in the senior high years.
The honest read from teachers and parents who've been near the Maple Leaf system: it functions more like a business than a school. According to one parent on the system, the Canadian curriculum "ignited my child's passion for learning" and small classes get praised. But one teacher's line sums up the structural issue: it's "a Chinese school, with Chinese students, Chinese and Canadian Admin, but the Chinese side has the final say." Another, more bluntly: "Take Maple Leaf if you have no other option. It's not the worst school, but it's not very good either."
Staff turnover is high across the group, and the BC Ministry has historically had to tighten its grip on offshore Maple Leaf campuses after grade-inflation and contract complaints. That's group-wide, not Shenzhen-specific, but it's the cultural backdrop.
Bottom line for your friend: if the family is staying long-term in China and wants a route to a Canadian high school diploma at a lower price point than SIS, SAIS or ISNS, this can work. If they want a genuinely international peer group, expat-family social life, and the kind of pastoral and co-curricular depth the Shekou schools offer, look at those instead. Worth visiting in person and asking specifically about Western-hire teacher retention and how many international families are actually enrolled in the year group their child would join.
