In Brief
It's a senior school (Grades 6-12) sitting right in the Gubei expat community in Hongqiao. Bilingual, with IB Diploma, A Level and AP options on offer. Parent body is mixed — a lot of returnee Chinese families and Asian expats (Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese), fewer Western expats than at the more obvious internationals nearby.
University outcomes are the headline strength. Big year-on-year list of UK Russell Group, US top-30 and Hong Kong placements. Strong destinations are real and they get parents through the door.
The honest texture, from people who've worked there or had kids go through:
- Academics are demanding. Pace is fast and there's a lot of homework. Kids who are already strong students do well; kids who need scaffolding can struggle. - Culturally it leans more Chinese than "international." East Meets West is the brand, but day-to-day expectations, communication style and parent dynamics feel local. According to one parent, families who want a fully Western feel sometimes find it isn't quite that. - The site is small and shared-use — no sprawling campus, classrooms double up. If your friend is picturing big sports fields and theatres, this isn't that school. - Staffing has had its bumps. One teacher said the package is "on the low side, especially for Shanghai," and reviews mention churn at admin level. New senior leadership came in for 2025-26, which parents are watching. - Pastoral and parent communication get mixed reviews. Some parents say it's warm and engaged; others say it can feel transactional.
Best fit: motivated, academically focused families who want strong IB/A Level outcomes, like the Gubei location, and don't mind a more Chinese-flavoured international school. Less of a fit for families wanting big facilities or a Western-expat majority.
Tell them to visit twice — once on a tour, once unannounced at pickup — and to ask current parents (not the school) about homework load and how the new leadership is bedding in.
