In Brief
A small, German-curriculum school out at the Al Bustan compound in Al Arid, north of the city. Founded in 1975. It carries Germany's "Excellent German School Abroad" seal, which matters if you want a real Abitur-pathway feel rather than a German-flavoured international school.
It is genuinely small. People describe it as a tight community where everyone knows each other. That is a plus if you want warmth and a soft landing, less so if you want a big year group or a deep ECA bench.
Fees are noticeably lower than the British, American and newer "premium" Riyadh schools. For a German family on a posted package, this is one of the few where the fee structure feels normal, not eye-watering.
Most teachers are sent from Germany on foreign-service contracts. Quality is generally solid and consistent, but rotation is real — staff cycle in and out on fixed German postings rather than settling long-term. One teacher who worked there described the practical hassles bluntly: long bus runs, a crowded staffroom, German and Saudi holiday calendars not lining up.
Parent feedback online is thin and mostly warm. According to one parent, their daughter "blossomed academically and socially" thanks to teachers who "genuinely care." Another said staff were "incredibly helpful and supportive." Take the volume with a pinch of salt — there just aren't many public reviews.
The big structural caveat: until very recently the school stopped at Grade 10. Families had to either head back to Germany for Gymnasium or move their child to a Riyadh IB school for years 11-12. DISR is now an authorised IB World School running the bilingual German-English IB Diploma (GIB) from 2025, which closes that gap — but the upper school is brand new, so Year 11 and 12 cohorts will be tiny in the first years.
Location is worth flagging. Al Arid is up the north end of Riyadh. If you're living DQ, Diplomatic Quarter or central, the bus run is long.
Bottom line for your friend A good fit if you are German-speaking, want German curriculum and German-trained teachers, and value a small, family-feel community over scale. Fees are reasonable for Riyadh. Two things to pressure-test on a visit: how settled the new GIB upper school is for your child's year, and the commute from wherever you'll be living — Al Arid is not central.
