In Brief

It's the one everyone in St-Germain talks about. Public school, free (small section fees apply), and routinely scores 99-100% on the bac. About 4,000 kids across 14 national sections — British is the biggest, American close behind.

The reputation is real. So is the workload. Kids do the full French curriculum *plus* their national section on top. That means more hours, more homework, more pressure than a regular French school.

Locally the school is well-loved but with eyes open. Parents describe it as demanding rather than nurturing. According to one parent, "it's really unsnobby compared to the various Ecole Active Bilingue options" — which is the line you hear repeatedly. Less polish than the private Paris bilinguals, more substance.

The honest bit: it doesn't suit every child. One parent put it plainly — "tears of frustration and even a bit of anger" early on, but worth it in the end. Another pulled one of two sons out because "he was not thriving at all at the Lycee" and was happier elsewhere. Some describe it as a "hothouse or conveyor belt." Kids who can handle a heavy academic load, who like structure, tend to flourish. Kids who need more hand-holding or creative breathing room sometimes don't.

Outcomes are strong. Russell Group is common, Oxbridge regular, US universities likewise from the American section.

Two practical things worth knowing: - Admission is selective and section-specific. Each section runs its own language test. Plan early. - The "externe" route (part-time, attending a partner French school the rest of the week) is how a lot of expat families start. One parent said externe kids can feel like they're "not really having the impression that it's their school" — integration takes time.

Bottom line for your friend: if the child is academically resilient and the family is up for the workload, this is arguably the best public international option in France. If the child needs a softer landing, look at the British School of Paris or one of the Paris bilinguals as well — locals routinely mention having alternatives nearby is part of why St-Germain works as a base.
