In Brief
Officially the Scuola Statale Italiana di Madrid. Run directly by the Italian government, in Chamberí. Italian curriculum from infantil through liceo, with mandatory Spanish ESO and Bachillerato content layered in. Kids leave at 2pm - a short day by Madrid international standards.
Who it suits. Families with a real Italian connection or a clear plan to head to an Italian or Spanish university. The orientation department supports both. Kids who start young come out genuinely trilingual (Italian, Spanish, English) and steeped in Italian culture. Fees are low for an international school (around 6,000 EUR at infantil level) because of the state subsidy.
What parents actually say. The community is tight - most families have been there since age 3 and the atmosphere at school events is warm. According to one parent, the best part is "the ease with which children naturally learn another language" and the freedom of the early-finish day. Teachers are described as experienced, and there is a dedicated programme to bring non-Italian-speaking newcomers up to speed.
Where to go in eyes open. The liceo (high school) years draw the most criticism. One parent described it as chaotic, with patchy communication between staff and families and a notable dropout rate. Workload is heavy - "triple" what kids face elsewhere, according to one parent. Italian-style grading is tough; high marks are rare and that can rattle families used to Spanish or UK norms. The 2pm finish sounds great until you realise comedor places are scarce and extracurriculars on site are limited. A handful of older reviews mention teachers being sharp with kids over their accent or appearance - not a pattern, but worth listening for.
Bottom line for your friend. If the Italian link is real, this school is hard to beat for value and authenticity. If it is being chosen mainly for "an international option", the short day, thin extracurriculars and demanding liceo years may grate. Visit, sit in on a liceo class if possible, and ask current parents about communication.
