It's the real thing. A German state-curriculum school on a beautiful Thames-side site in Petersham, ending in the German Abitur (with an IB option). Not a "German-flavoured international school."

Heavily subsidised by the German government, so fees are unusually low for what you get (around £10k a year is typical).

The catch is the language. Lessons, homework and most parent communications run in German from Year 1. According to one parent, it's "a mad idea" to try to support a child through it without German at home. They will assess your child's German before offering a place.

Academically demanding and structured. One parent who transferred in described it as "more challenging academically than the top rated British secondary school" their child came from, with clear targets and detailed feedback. Another said her daughter finished the school day with energy left "to play with friends" — shorter days than the English equivalents.

Pastoral care is well regarded. Small classes (around 20). Facilities are strong: pool, science block, big grounds.

Two honest downsides. First, it's transient — expat families cycle through, and one parent flagged "many kids attending for a few years then moving abroad/back to Germany." Second, the German system streams early and is, in one parent's words, "very restrictive and doesn't celebrate creativity" compared to British schools — worth knowing if your child is more creative than academic.

Best fit: at least one fluent German-speaking parent, family planning to stay German-track or return to a German-speaking country, and a child who can handle a structured academic environment. If those don't all line up, look elsewhere.
