Free state sixth form. Selective. Two-year A-level only, no Year 7-11. Often called "the Eton of the East End" because Eton and a handful of other independent schools helped set it up and still partner with it.

It is genuinely one of the top sixth forms in the country. 20 Oxbridge offers in the 2025 cycle, two-thirds of grades at A*-A for seven years running. Around 7,000 applications for 250 places, so getting in is the first hurdle.

Academically demanding, and people are honest about that. According to one student, "A-level study can be intense." Another put it bluntly: "if you strive under pressure, are highly ambitious and actually give a damn about your education, then this is the school for you." The flip side is that staff are responsive. One student said teachers will tell you to stop if you've spent more than a few hours on homework, and will dial down what they set if you flag it.

The wider package is stronger than the "exam factory" cliché suggests. Weekly futures assemblies with firms like Meta and the banks, Year 12 work experience, sport at the Olympic Park on Thursday afternoons. One parent said, "It's not all study, study, study."

One thing your friend should know about. There has been a sustained complaint from former Muslim students and a Change.org petition about the lack of an on-site prayer space and the handling of prayer during the school day. The school disputes the framing, but the issue is real and live, and worth raising directly at an open day if it matters to the family.

Bottom line. If their child is academically ambitious and self-driven, LAE is one of the best deals in London at zero fees. If they want hand-holding or a gentler pace, look elsewhere.
