In Brief
A small private sixth form (with a smaller GCSE section) in Belsize Park. Famous for art and creative subjects. Part of Dukes Education.
The vibe is uni, not school. No uniform, first names, students come and go. Classes are tiny: around 12 at GCSE, around 8 at A level. That suits a particular kind of teenager.
Who it works for: creative, self-directed kids, often ones who've struggled in bigger, more conventional private schools. Parents whose children landed well say the relief is real. According to one parent, their child is "absolutely loving it" and another said they were finally "happy" after years that hadn't worked elsewhere.
Where to be honest with your friend: - It is genuinely strong on art, design and creative A-levels. Sciences are a known weak spot. One parent flagged "awful facilities... not even a science lab" at GCSE level. If your friend's child is science-leaning, this is the wrong school. - Music is traditional-light: no orchestras, no ensembles. - Extracurriculars are thin. The day is loosely structured. - Drugs and vaping come up repeatedly in parent forums. The school says zero-tolerance, contracts, random testing twice a year. Parents standing outside say they see vaping and worse. Your friend should ask directly at the visit. - Lower years (Y9-11) are very small cohorts, and one parent said younger kids visibly try to act like the sixth formers around them.
Cost-of-fit question, not a cost question: this school is excellent if the child is arty, mature-ish, and needs space to breathe. It is risky if the child needs structure, peer-group pressure to work, or wants a broad sciences/sport/music school life.
One parent summed up the trade-off well: it offers "tiny classes and hand holding" but won't suit a child who needs "more rules and discipline."
Tell your friend to visit on a normal weekday, talk to current sixth formers, and ask the head directly about drug-testing outcomes and what happens to disruptive students.
