In Brief
Bit of an outlier among London sixth forms. Glass tower opposite Parliament, no uniform, first-name basis with teachers. Feels more like a small university than a school. Heavily international — roughly two-thirds of students are from overseas, around 60 nationalities. Boarding is in the same building as classrooms, which the kids either love or find claustrophobic.
Reputation around town: people who know it call it "modern, urban and undeniably cool" and good for kids who are mature, self-starting and want central London on their doorstep. It is genuinely not a fit for kids who need structure and chasing — the freedom is real, and the distractions of Westminster and the South Bank are right outside.
A levels are solid rather than spectacular — about a third get A*/A, around 60% A*/B. Class sizes 10-12. Strong on creative subjects and media (proper studios on site). They run BTECs, A levels and a one-year international foundation route, so it picks up kids who don't fit a traditional school.
Mixed bag in candid feedback. Parents tend to use words like "warm" and "nurturing". One parent pulled their daughter out, finding the GCSE course too rigid and "structured". One ex-student was harsher, saying there's "absolutely no room to study, just a common room where there are no desks" and warning of pressure spikes around mock results. Staff feedback is pretty grim about management — relevant only because high turnover can affect kids mid-A-level.
Money: day fees around £30k, boarding can push past £60k for the higher-end rooms. Expensive even by London standards.
Bottom line for your friend. If their kid is independent, ambitious, likes a city and would chafe in a traditional uniformed school, DLD is one of the more interesting options in London. If their kid needs hand-holding or a tight pastoral net, look at MPW or a more conventional sixth form first. Worth a visit on a weekday — you'll know within an hour whether the vibe suits.
