BBS is the school Kuwaiti families want their kids in. Established 1977, non-profit, American curriculum with serious Arabic alongside it. Big campus in Hawally, rebuilt around 2010, strong facilities, low-ish class sizes (19-25). Graduates routinely go to good universities in the US, Canada and the region.

The catch: it's overwhelmingly Kuwaiti. This isn't a typical expat school. Arabic and Islamic studies are mandatory, and a chunk of the day is in Arabic. If your friend's kids don't have Arabic, fit will be hard, and entry slots for non-Kuwaitis are limited.

Culture is the part to go in clear-eyed about. According to one parent, the school "encourages bullying and turns a blind eye to it." A teacher described student behaviour as among the worst they'd seen anywhere. There's also a recurring theme that loud parent group chats can move the administration — including, allegedly, on grades. Generous read: it's a tight, well-connected community where social dynamics run hot, and a non-Kuwaiti child can feel that.

On the upside, the parent body is well-educated and genuinely engaged — PTA, coffees, charity drives are real, not for show. Teacher pay and benefits are good, which helps retention. Elementary gets more criticism than the upper school; one teacher said they'd "stay very far away" from the elementary division.

Bottom line for your friend: if the family is Kuwaiti or Arabic-speaking and wants the most prestigious bilingual track in the country, BBS is genuinely the answer. If they're a non-Arabic-speaking expat family, this is probably not the right school — point them at ASK, BSK or AIS instead.
