In Brief
ACA is a large American-curriculum school in Hawalli, founded 1997, around 4,000+ students across two campuses. IB Diploma offered in the senior years.
It is genuinely a Kuwaiti school with an American wrapper. Most students are Arab nationals. Arabic and Islamic Studies run all the way through. Prayer is part of the daily rhythm. Genders are separated from Grade 1 onwards, on two campuses minutes apart. Worth knowing upfront.
The vibe parents describe is more "Kuwaiti national school taught in English" than "international school." If you want a Western expat mix and a fully secular feel, this isn't it. ASK and AIS are closer to that.
Academics are reasonably regarded. Even critical reviewers tend to mark academics and facilities higher than atmosphere. The IB programme is established (since 2008). Facilities are solid: pools, labs, art rooms.
The recurring grumbles, common-sense filtered: - Teacher turnover. Staff reviews flag it repeatedly. Expect some churn year to year. - Extracurriculars are thin compared to peer American schools. Sports beyond football are limited. Arts and clubs are modest. - Discipline and follow-through are inconsistent. According to one parent, "no proper rules nor discipline." One teacher said student "behavior goes unchecked with little to no follow up." Generous read: large school, busy admin, mixed experience by division and year. - Admin/HR can be slow. Frustrating for new joiners but not a child-facing issue.
Who it suits: families comfortable with an Islamic-values environment, single-gender schooling from Grade 1, and a predominantly Arab peer group, who want an American/IB pathway at a lower price point than ASK or AIS.
Who it doesn't suit: families wanting a Western-style co-ed expat bubble, a deep co-curricular programme, or a strict and consistent behaviour culture.
Practical tip for your friend: visit both campuses, ask specifically about teacher retention in your child's grade, and ask to see the activities calendar rather than the activities list.
