In Brief
KES is one of Joburg's old guard. Public boys' school, grades 8 to 12, on the Houghton ridge. Founded 1902. Around 1,100 boys. Fees are modest by private-school standards — roughly R56k a year for tuition, more if boarding.
The reputation here is real. Strong academics, very strong sport, deep alumni network. Old boys include Gary Player, Bryan Habana, Malcolm Marx, Graeme Smith, Quinton de Kock. People genuinely rate it. According to one parent, KES is "possibly the best school in the country" for sport and that "electric all-boy school energy."
What you should know honestly:
Rugby is the centre of gravity. If your son plays, he'll find his tribe fast. If he doesn't, he can still thrive — but he'll need to be solid in academics, music, or another sport, and he'll need to be okay with rugby being the loudest thing in the room.
The culture is traditional, hierarchical and unapologetically masculine. That works brilliantly for some boys and is a hard fit for others. Discipline is a feature, not a bug.
There is honest commentary about bullying and "tradition" between year groups. According to one former student, "bullying occurs often as higher grades pick on lower grades and call it tradition." School leadership has worked on this over the years and most current parents speak well of pastoral care, but ask directly about it on tours and listen to how they answer.
Boys who are quiet, sensitive, or arts-leaning can fly here, but they need a teacher or coach who notices them. Less stellar boys can drift if the family isn't engaged.
Admissions favour locals, brothers of current pupils, sons of staff and Old Boys. Apply early. Sport and academic record both matter at interview.
Bottom line for your friend: if their son is sporty, robust, and likes structure, KES is a fantastic landing spot with a network that lasts a lifetime. If he's more sensitive or bookish, KES can still be the right answer — but visit twice, meet the housemaster, and trust your gut.
