In Brief
Hisar is a large K-12 private Turkish school out in Göktürk, on the European side. Not a true international school — it's a Turkish national curriculum school that layers in English, AP, and IB at the top end. The student body is overwhelmingly affluent Turkish families. If you're moving over and want a properly international cohort, this is not that school.
The campus is the headline. Modern, leafy, well-resourced — parents and visitors consistently say it looks the part. Teachers, especially in English, are generally well-regarded and try hard.
The honest reservations are about value and academic depth. Hisar is among the most expensive schools in Turkey, and a recurring complaint is that high-achieving kids end up in private tutoring (dershane) on top of fees to plug gaps in maths, Turkish, and sciences. According to one parent, "successful students don't get enough from the school and have to go to tutoring centres." It also doesn't carry the same old-money academic prestige as Robert College or Istanbul Lisesi — it's newer (founded 1996) and more associated with new-money Istanbul.
Other things she should know: extras like sports teams can come with additional fees, and one teacher said the calendar shifts at short notice — so build flexibility into family travel plans. The Göktürk location is lovely but means a long commute if she's living anywhere central or on the Asian side.
Bottom line for your friend: if she wants a comfortable, well-facilitied school in a Turkish-family social world, and she's prepared to top up with tutoring, Hisar works. If she wants an internationally-mixed cohort or the strongest pure academics in the city, look at IICS (for international) or Robert College / TED / Üsküdar American (for top Turkish academic).
