In Brief
UCIS opened in 2017. American curriculum, Common Core, with PYP and MYP elements. Pre-K through Grade 12, around 760 students.
The student body is mostly Thai (~37%) and Chinese (~33%), with smaller Korean, American and mixed-heritage cohorts. If your friend wants their child mixing in a deeply Western expat scene, this is not that school. If they want a regional Asian international environment, it fits.
Campus is modern. Pool, sports courts, science and computer labs, separate buildings by age group. Parents consistently call the facilities a strong point.
Location is the first practical issue. The school sits on the Chiang Mai-Lampang superhighway in Saraphi, south of the city. One staff member described it as "off a terrifying highway." Factor in the school-run bus or a long daily drive.
Teachers get warm reviews from parents. One parent said the teachers and TAs are "friendly and understanding" and the activities programme is genuinely good. Pastoral feel seems real.
The honest caveats come from staff. Recurring themes from people who've worked there: communication between the two campuses can be patchy, some parents are treated as customers rather than partners, and one teacher said the emphasis is on "making a large profit and not on the quality of education." Take with the usual pinch of salt - these are anonymous staff reviews and the school is still young - but the pattern is consistent enough to mention.
Fees are mid-range for Chiang Mai (roughly THB 210k-390k a year), which is well below Bangkok and below Prem. Accreditation is via CIS and NEASC; WASC was in progress.
Bottom line for your friend: Solid facilities, friendly day-to-day environment, accessible price. Best fit if they want a smaller, Asian-majority American-curriculum school and don't mind the highway commute. Worth visiting both campuses on the same day, asking specifically how the two sides communicate, and asking current parents - not admissions - about teacher turnover.
