In Brief
Small, German-curriculum school out in Saraphi, surrounded by rice fields. About 230 to 270 students from kindergarten through to the German International Abitur. Most families are German, Austrian or Swiss, with a smaller group of non-German speakers using the DaF/DaZ language entry programmes.
It is the only German-track school in Chiang Mai, so the choice is largely made for you if you want your kids to slot back into the German-speaking system later. Officially recognised by the German Foreign Office and re-awarded "Excellent German School Abroad" in 2022 after the BLI inspection, which is the inspection that actually matters for German schools abroad.
The character is genuinely small-school. One class per grade, often all three Abitur streams sitting in the same room. According to one parent, the welcoming campus and warm community feeling are what stand out on a first visit. That cuts both ways: very personal, but if your child clashes with a teacher or doesn't gel with the year group, there is no second class to move to.
Worth knowing: it is a Christian school in substance, not just name. Founded by the Marburger Mission together with the Church of Christ in Thailand. Biblical studies are part of the curriculum and Christian values are baked into school life. Families of all faiths are welcomed and it is not pushy by most accounts, but if a Christian framing is a hard no for you, this is not the right school.
Fees are at the lower end for Chiang Mai international schools, which is a real advantage but not, by what people say, a sign of cut corners. Sport is taken seriously through the CMAC league. The CDSC Forest outdoor-learning project picked up a German Chamber of Commerce award and parents like it.
Honest gap: there is very little independent online commentary on this school. The German-language Thailand expat forum has parents asking the same question your friend is asking and getting no real answers. That is unusual and probably reflects the size of the community more than anything else. Tell your friend to visit, sit in on a lesson, and talk to two or three current parents at pickup. With a school this small, fit is the whole game.
The commute is the other practical thing. Saraphi is southeast of the city, a 20 to 30 minute drive from the Old Town depending on traffic and where you land. Worth factoring into where you rent.
