In Brief
The LFIP is the long-established French school in Chaoyang. Around 800-1,000 students, roughly 50-57 nationalities, purpose-built campus in Laiguangying since 2016. Run directly by the AEFE (the French government's overseas schools agency), so the curriculum, teacher recruitment and quality assurance are tightly French. That's the main thing to understand: this is a French national school that happens to be in Beijing, not a generic international school.
Three streams: standard French, French/English bilingual ("British" stream, ~5 hrs English subjects/week), and French/Chinese bilingual. All lead to a French Baccalauréat. Anglophone families do exist there - English-speaking kids picking up French in primary is common, and there's FLE support - but everyday school life happens in French. If your friend isn't French-speaking, eyes open: the social and admin centre of gravity is firmly francophone.
Fees are notably lower than the British/American international options - roughly a third of the cost of the British School, which parents on French-expat forums flag as a real factor.
Community feel: small, tight, and very French. Kids who land here often stay for the rest of a Beijing posting. The diversity headline (50+ nationalities) is real but most non-French families are francophone Africans or francophone Europeans.
Two honest things to flag.
One, the new campus had a VOC/off-gassing issue when it opened in 2016 - parents reported kids feeling unwell, the school tested, found VOCs above safe limits in the gym, auditorium and some classroom doors, closed those spaces and ventilated. They were transparent about it. A decade on this is history, not a live issue, and the air filtration for PM2.5 is genuinely good - but it's worth knowing the school has been tested and responded.
Two, there's a thread of admin-vs-staff friction in the school's past (a public 2011 dispute over a non-renewed teacher led to strikes). According to one teacher at the time, the management style was "little appreciated by teaching staff" with complaints of poor communication. Leadership has turned over since. Worth asking current parents how the current proviseur is landing.
Open-day experience gets mixed reviews. According to one parent who visited, the welcome was "poor... unclear where to go, minimal information about the school itself" - generic brochures, classes viewed only through door windows, little detail on extracurriculars. Don't read too much into the open day; ask to speak to current parents directly.
Bottom line for your friend: if the family speaks French (or wants the kids to come out fluent), LFIP is a strong, serious, properly-run school at a sensible price by Beijing standards. If they're fully anglophone with no French ambition, the British School or WAB will be a smoother fit.
