In Brief

Daystar is one of the better-known bilingual options in Chaoyang. Three campuses: Beigao (the K-12 mothership), Sanlitun (Grades 1-5, more central), and Quanfa (early years). Around 1,000 kids. Full IB continuum. Dual CIS/WASC accredited.

The pitch parents repeat back: small, warm, genuinely bilingual, and unusually focused on character and "social innovation" — not just IB exam factory. According to one parent, the bilingual environment "and social innovation are a wonderful complement to the MYP and IB program... teachers really care, and it shows." That tracks with what you hear locally — families who choose Daystar tend to be bought in to the bilingual mission, not just looking for an English-medium school.

Demographics matter for your friend. Beigao is roughly 15% international; Sanlitun closer to 20-30%. So it's a bilingual Chinese school with international kids in it — not WAB or ISB. If your friend wants their child genuinely fluent in Mandarin, that's the whole point. If they want a Western-bubble experience, this isn't it.

The honest caveats are mostly internal. Staff commentary points to a heavy workload, top-heavy admin, and frequent changes of direction. One teacher said the school "has moved away from its family-forward focus" as it has scaled. Communication from the top is described as last-minute. None of this is unusual for a fast-growing bilingual group, but it does occasionally surface as inconsistency for parents — a teacher leaving, a programme shifting.

IB Diploma is still relatively young at the senior end, so course breadth is thinner than at the older heavyweights. Fine for most kids; worth checking if your friend's child has a niche subject need.

Net: a strong, sincere, properly bilingual choice for a family that wants their kid to come out fluent in Mandarin and grounded in something more than test prep. Go in with eyes open about the growing-pains side. Visit both Beigao and Sanlitun before deciding — they feel different.
