In Brief
NOS is not really an "international school" in the expat sense. It's a long-established Jordanian institution — founded 1957, Greek Orthodox-affiliated but mixed Christian and Muslim, and the country's first co-ed school. Two campuses: Shmaisani and Ashrafieh. Around 2,400 students at Shmaisani.
The expat scene in Amman defaults to ACS, ICS, ABS or King's Academy. NOS sits alongside those but pulls a much more local, Jordanian middle-class crowd. If your friend wants their kid in a small expat bubble, this isn't it. If they want their kid in a real Amman community with Jordanian classmates and proper Arabic, it is.
Curriculum is a buffet — Jordanian Tawjihi, British (IGCSE/A Level), or IB Diploma in the senior years. Bilingual Arabic-English throughout. Fees are mid-tier by Amman standards (roughly JOD 3,350-5,915), which is a fraction of ACS or King's.
Reputation locally is solid and old-money-ish without being snobby. Alumni stay loyal — "once an NOS-er, always an NOS-er" is the line you hear, and according to one parent online the school is recommended by around 78% of reviewers on its public page. Strong on basketball and sport generally. Religiously mixed and described by the school itself as drawing students "from diverse religious and socio-economic backgrounds" — most Jordanians who've been through it confirm that holds up in practice.
Things to flag for your friend: - It's a big school. 2,400 kids. Not boutique. - Less hand-holding for non-Arabic speakers than at ACS/ICS, though the Tamkeen Centre does support Arabic-language catch-up. - Admissions: apply early, it's competitive at popular grade entry points like all decent Amman schools. - Shmaisani campus is central — traffic at pickup is Amman-normal, which is to say not great.
Bottom line: a strong, serious, locally-rooted school with a long track record. Right choice if the family wants real integration into Jordan and bilingual fluency. Wrong choice if they want a transient international cohort and an English-only environment.
